Deenie is 13 years old and beautiful. Her mother wants her to be a model but Deenie isn’t so sure. When she is diagnosed with scoliosis (curvature of the spine) Deenie is almost relieved. No more modelling agencies, no more having to live up to her mother’s expectations. Unfortunately, Deenie has to wear an uncomfortable back brace for the next four years and she is convinced that it will put an end to her normal teenage life and her blossoming relationship with Buddy Brader.

Deenie tackles typical female teenage issues, coping with expectations and what happens when a parent pigeonholes their children. This is the second Judy Blume novel I have read and again, I wish I had read it when I was younger because I know I would have loved to read this when I was 13. Judy Blume’s novels are entertaining, simple and easy to read – perfect for a lazy day.  The dialogue is realistic and the characters are all believable and interesting. Whether you are looking for something simple to read or you’re looking to learn about scoliosis, I would definitely recommend this!

Since the book was published, new ways of treating scoliosis have been developed, though some patients still wear the Milwaukee Brace. To find out more information you can try: http://www.iscoliosis.com
